If you have had acne outbreaks in the past and are now left with scars, then you have probably spent time trying to find ways to cure acne scars. Getting rid of acne scars can be difficult because many of them are deep and are not just on the surface of your skin.

So what can you do to cure acne scars?

Understanding the different types of scars that can occur with acne is important. Not all acne scars are the same and some can be treated easier than others.

Ice pick scars are named for their shape. They are shallow and deep and have jagged edges and steep sides. They might not be very wide. You generally find these on your cheeks and they can also be called “depressed fibrotic scarring”.

Boxcar scars resemble scars that can be left behind after chickenpox. These scars are oval shaped and have sharp edges. Sometimes they are deep and sometimes they are not. You can usually find them on the temples and on the cheeks.

There are also rolling scars which look like rolling hills. These are caused by tissue damage under the skin and because of this, lasers and dermabrasion will not work on them. They generally have to be treated with subcision.

Lastly, hypertrophic scars are small red bumps. These will usually fade in time and aren’t always caused just by acne.

Some people are able to cure acne scars by using subcision. This can cost up to $1,000 per treatment. It involves detaching the upper layer of skin from the deeper tissue, which lets the blood flow into the opening and raise the skin. Sometimes it will take several treatments in order to get the most effective results.

Punch treatments are a little cheaper and can cure acne scars by several different methods. The first method involves cutting out the scar and replacing it with a skin graft. You can also have the scar cut out and the skin around it stretched to cover the area, without needing a skin graft. A third method involves cutting the scar loose from the tissue and allowing it to heal.

Chemical peels are also used to cure acne scars. These cost anywhere from $500-800. In some cases, a form of acid is applied to the skin and then removed, taking the top layer of skin with it. These can be very painful, however, and some of the strongest peels are akin to getting a burn and have to be treated with large bandages and antibiotics.

Dermabrasion can be used to cure acne scars in some instances. Dermabrasion works in a similar fashion to sandblasting. In essence, the top layer of the skin is mechanically removed by sanding it off. Sometimes the results are only short-term, however.

Like dermabrasion, laser treatments have been helpful to some people, but others report that the scars return. Laser treatments can also be very expensive and not everyone’s scars are suited for the lasers.

For something less invasive, painful, and expensive, there are some acne scar creams available, too. Creams that contain coca butter, Vitamin E, and hydrofluoric acid  can be helpful. However, the hydrofluoric acid should be supervised by your doctor and not done on your own.
